Resign him so they continue to lose with McJesus... and to spite Tanner by giving Russel a big contract

Agree that they shouldn't resign Russell. He has been an adequate stop gap so far and hope he continues to do so this year but they need a better option moving forward. http://www.theoilersrig.c...s-vs-wild-tracking-stats/ The Oil Rigs report from the Wild game suggests that Russell succeeded in controlled exits. Something that runs the opposite of Matt's suggestion that he is weak at exits.

That was 1 game and you'll note that the same post has Russell at one of the highest turnover rates on the defense

Oh poop. He's sharpening a knife. Look out, there will be blood. Only his own though, so it's ok.

So a bunch of Blogger pretty much unanimously state they either don't watch the games or have terrible hockey sense.

Kris Russel should absolutely be reupped. 4 mill per year is really perfect money for what he brings but I would personally like to see him only signed for 2-3 years. Remember he was holding out for 5 by most accounts and that's why he went unsigned to begin with. He is absolutely a top 4 defenseman and able to play on either side without being caved in by top competition.

Russel is by far and away our best Left shooting but right playing defender. Sekera is ok in that role but realistically significantly better on his primary side.

Russel/Sekera HAS absolutely been our best pairing many/most(?) nights. Playing hard minutes and hard match ups and they have been our most consistent.

Nurse is very far from being a top 4 defender. Very far. He started rough, then played great and went back to struggling all in primarily a bottom pairing role.

Benning is playing like a solid #6/7 with maybe enough upside to be a #5. I do not ever foresee him being a top 4 solution.

Davidson "could" replace Russel but we just don't know for sure. Especially if he is expected to play on his off side.

Reinhart... long ways off if ever the way he is going.

There are no available top 4 options that can play the right side period. There is just such a considerable difference in a guy that can play top in a top 4 and who can not and the Oilers record with Russel injured shows that.

The only thing that needs to be done with any contract the Oilers sign with Russel is that there is to make sure there are no, no movement/no trade clauses in it. Sign Russel for 2-4 years at 4 mill per and leave him exposed to the expansion draft. Bad analytics or not with the way things are going right now I would be surprised if LV didn't snap him up. Which would not be great, since we need a top 4 guy able to play the right side, but would also not be terrible either.

If you don't sign Russel I imagine that Davidson has a decent chance to be taken in expansion and then you don't have anyone able to fill out your top 4 for next year.

I'd give Russell a 2-3 year extension worth 2.5-3 mill and absolutely no NMC. But thats about it.
